The Australian Free Church has its roots in the Free Church of Scotland which emerged from the Church of Scotland after “The Disruption” of 1843. This event involved some 470 ministers leaving the Church of Scotland rather than compromise their convictions regarding the separation of church and state.
The Australian Free Church was formed in 1979 out of a desire to maintain the standards of doctrine, worship and church government held by our Scottish spiritual forebears.
Congregations were formed in Melbourne and Hamilton in Victoria. The Melbourne congregation moved to its present site in suburban Chadstone in 1989.
The first Presbytery of Australian Free Church was constituted in 2002. On Friday 19 June 2009 the Grace Presbyterian Church congregation in Rockhampton Queensland was welcomed as a congregation of the Australian Free Church
